I guess if I want to be completely honest, I started doing rescue when I was just a young girl about 7 years of age. I had heard from a classmate who's parents were abusing a dog and kept him in a closet and did not want him anymore. Naturally I rushed home and made my parents go there and we ended up taking him home with us. I think that's when my love for the "Underdog" really started to come out. As I got older and started to educate myself more on dogs and misconceptions that came with certain breeds I knew I had to help somewhere. Being from Ontario I started to help with the ban on pit bulls in any way I could. I moved to Alberta in 2007 and started getting involved with rescues right away. I was very much apart of a breed specific rescue for a long time when I noticed that pit bulls were not the only power breed that really needed our help. That is when we put together the idea of a power breed rescue and made the commitment to help these beautifully misunderstood dogs in need. I am extremely blessed and thankful to have a husband that supports me and my dreams in rescue and proudly live with my rottweiler cross Nellie, pit bull Rocky and cat Kingston. I am so excited for where Underdogs Rescue is going everyday and truly proud of the people I have standing next to me in this wonderful adventure.

I was born on a farm in BC, constantly surrounded by dogs of many breeds. When I rescued my first pit bull I had no idea about the misconceptions and public perception about the breed; I had just fallen in love with a fawn dog with soft brown eyes that needed rescuing. Meeting Chance changed my life and my passion, and I wanted to do something about it! I started volunteering with rescues and eventually accepted a position looking after foster homes. I learned a lot and being a foster home myself, I understood the knowledge and support needed! I also started noticing all the other breeds that needed rescue, and being an all-round dog lover I wanted to start a rescue that took in all misunderstood breeds.  I love the rehabilitation part of rescue, the challenge and successes of some of my past foster dogs has taught me more about who I am than any other experience. Fostering also gave me Bubba, my first foster failure; he stole my heart with his sad eyes and absolute devotion! I am blessed to live on acreage with a husband that supports my passion and works right alongside me. We, and my pack (Shelby, Chance and Bubba) as well as my 2 horses still foster, every rescued dog has a special place in my heart! So excited for the future of Underdogs and our supporters!

I have always been a fan of the “underdog”, having grown up with a Doberman Pincher, Samoyed and a Boxer. I first became aware of breed misconceptions after adopting Tierra, a tenacious Olde English Bulldogge. Later I would learn even more about breed misconceptions after adopting Lexi, my first rescue pitbull. Her amazing demeanor with my sassy bulldog Mason and her love for people especially kids inspired me to get involved. I started volunteering with a pitbull rescue and it became my passion! Being a bulldog lady at heart, I knew I had to help with all the misunderstood power breeds and was thrilled when Underdogs adopted me into their family. It is with Underdogs that I have discovered a profound love in helping with the assessment and rehabilitation of these amazing dogs. I am thankful for my boyfriend and of course Mason and Lexi who support and assist me wherever needed. I am excited to be part of Underdogs and its future.

Jas and I have been dog lovers our entire lives but never actually got the opportunity to have a dog until much later on in life. Jas started to learn more about different breeds and asked if we could adopt a Pitbull. My initial reaction was a hard “no.”   This was solely based on my ignorance and the media perception of these dogs. Jas had asked me to read only fact-based research on these breeds before making a final decision. Once I completed my research, I decided to give this misunderstood breed a chance. We met our first dog Stella, a pitbull-mix dog four years ago. She instantly bonded with me that I knew we could never give her back. Stella had shown not only Jas and I but all of our family and friends how loving and loyal this breed could be. A few years later, Jas convinced me again that Stella needed a buddy in the house. He had heard of Underdogs through a mutual friend and was really intrigued that they were focusing on all power (misunderstood) breeds. We both really connected with Jade and Natasha and ended up adopting Dobby (an Underdogs alumni pup). Dobby was the goof that we were missing to complete our furry family. We were both really impressed with the commitment and hard work that all of the Underdogs board members put in, that we knew we wanted to get more involved and give back to the rescue community. Everyone has been so welcoming and positive that we have really enjoyed our time working with the rescue. We look forward to many more adventures with Underdogs in the future.
